Spinel gemstone

In mineralogy, spinel classifies a whole group of related minerals; only a few are of gemstone quality.

Spinel is mined from the metamorphic rock primary deposits in which it forms, but comes mostly from alluvial or placer deposits.

The origin of the name is uncertain, perhaps Greek “spark” or Latin “thorn.” The species gemologists designate as spinel occurs in all colors, the favorite being a ruby-like red. In ancient Sanskrit writing, spinel is referred to as the “daughter of ruby.”One rare color is blue, sometimes called cobalt spinel, gahnospinel, or sapphire spinel
The coloring agents are iron, chromium, vanadium, and cobalt. Large stones are rare and star spinels are very rare. Colorless spinel was unknown until recently and is extremely rare, as is pure brought green and vivid yellow spinel.

In 2007 a giant red spinel crystal weighing 52 kilograms was discovered in Tanzania. Although only about 3 percent of the some was suitable for gem material many fine stones from 5 to 30 carats were faceted from this piece.
